“Getting Wise About Fear” with Tara Mohr

Author Tara Mohr reminds us that, when we are starting to play bigger in our lives or careers, we will have to make some courageous decisions in line with our dreams and aspirations. And that’s when fear is going to come knocking. When we try to eliminate fear or somehow leapfrog over our fear that sets up unrealistic expectations and is unfair to ourselves.

Instead, we want to get wise about what fear is, and what do we do when it comes up. Tara gives us a primer on the two kinds of fear in our lives and gives us the tools to identify what kind of fear we are facing.

“See Feedback In a New Way” with Tara Mohr

Author Tara Mohr says there is a link between the criticism that most hurts us and the negative beliefs we hold about ourselves. Likewise, there’s a relationship between the praise we most seek and the things that our insecurities tell us. So it’s not so much the “words” as it is how I attach them to what I am already feeling inside. The story tends to be about us.

One of the most powerful ways we can have a more useful relationship to praise and criticism is always to look at feedback and say, “What does that tell me about the person, or the people, giving the feedback?” Remember that feedback always shows you information about the person giving the feedback and it doesn’t necessarily tell you information about yourself.

“Discover Your Inner Mentor” with Tara Mohr

Author Tara Mohr talks about those rare moments in our lives when we have a clear, wise intuition or thought, and we see the solution. We have those moments here or there, but we can’t easily access that part of ourselves consistently. The "inner mentor" is a tool that allows us to access that wisest part of ourselves much more reliably.

“You Don’t Need More Confidence” with Tara Mohr

Tara Mohr says you don’t necessarily need more confidence. Rather, it’s about changing your relationship with self-doubt. Regardless of the level of success we achieve in our careers, even the most successful of us have a vocal and vicious inner critic. Even though we may think we don’t have it in “that area of my life,” it’s likely to show up in another area, as in my feelings about my body, or about how I am as a parent, son or daughter. The inner critic can show up in any arena of our lives.

It’s important that we learn how to live with it and manage it because it will limit our greatest game-changing, innovative work as an entrepreneur. It can even motivate us to do the wrong kind of work that keeps us playing small.

“Will It Fly?” with Pat Flynn

So you have a great idea for a business? But will that idea ultimately translate into a real product that will solve someone’s problems enough for them to pay for it? That’s where testing that idea comes in.

On this episode, Dave recaps episodes 431-434 where Pat Flynn talked about business strategies from his new book, “Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don't Waste Your Time and Money.”

“Validate Your Solution” with Pat Flynn

Author and entrepreneur Pat Flynn says, once you find a solution to the problems of others, you then have to validate that solution. People will say what you want to hear sometimes, but when it comes down to it, whether that idea is going to work out depends if they will actually pay for it.

Everyone most likely already has an “idea” in their head. However, those plans can change into something completely different because they align finally with the problems their target audience has. And it’s not always going to be the same idea you had initially. Many times the validation of your idea will take you somewhere completely different from what your initial idea was - and that’s a good thing.

“Dig Into Your Market” with Pat Flynn

Author and entrepreneur Pat Flynn says a great business serves others. That means we first have to know who those “other” people are. The first step is to see who else is out there serving that target audience. The goal for your business is to stand out of the crowd and be different, but how do you know what that means unless you know who else is standing around you.

You can discover this by creating your Market Map, which is an excellent exercise whether you’re just starting out in business or whether you’ve been doing it for awhile because it gives you a bird’s-eye perspective on your market that most people who are in that market don’t even have.

“Define Your Idea” with Pat Flynn

Many people start their business by creating a website, worrying about the design of it, and getting a logo without even discovering the pains and problems of their audience of what their business actually is. But author and entrepreneur Pat Flynn says that’s what a business is - it’s a solution to someone else’s problems. You can avoid starting your business off on the wrong foot by defining your idea first.

“Designing Your Mission” with Pat Flynn

Author and entrepreneur Pat Flynn compares your dream of starting a new business to flying an airplane. You get in a plane, you fly around, and it’s awesome! You have this freedom to do whatever you want. But unless you know where you’re going, you will eventually run out of gas, and you might end up further away from where your destination should be.

Pat says it’s important to have a flight plan or figure out what your mission is first. You’re building something that’s going to change other people’s lives, so there’s a lot at stake here. We want to make sure the things we do align with where we want to go.

“Creating a Side Hustle” with Chris Guillebeau

Author Chris Guillebeau says we should all start something, a freedom project, that you do on your own, aside from your day job, perhaps during the weekend. Research shows that people who have a side hustle were disproportionally happier and satisfied with their lives. You may not make a lot of money from it in the beginning, but it will give you the confidence to move forward with your new 2nd or 3rd source of income.

“Daily Evaluation” with Chris Guillebeau

Author Chris Guillebeau urges us to conduct our own daily evaluation. At the end of the day, ask yourself, "Did today matter?" and answer that question. The goal is to have as many days as possible that are positive, minimize the negative, and build a streak on it. If you spend a little time looking within yourself on these “life evaluations” it will certainly help you live with gratitude. And that starts making a big difference in your personal life going forward.

“Joy, Money, Flow” with Chris Guillebeau

Author Chris Guillebeau says most successful people do not follow a linear path or know what they want to be when they grow up. They make a lot of different decisions and choices; they do a lot of different things, and they even make some mistakes. And despite their diverse backgrounds, genders, and careers, successful people who have career satisfaction have something significant in common. All of these people have crafted a life around these three qualities: Joy, Money, and Flow.
